The journey

5 - The messy bit

Poo. Scraps. Sorted.

6 - Back to nature

The bag breaks down. Compost feeds the soil. Plants do a little happy dance.

4 - Bags are born

Strong, reliable poo bags and bin liners are born — ready for everyday messes.

3 - Waste becomes a resource

Those waste potatoes are transformed into plant-based starch and pellets. Still no plastic. Still no waste.

1 - It all starts in the soil

Deep, rich black earth. Rain-fed skies. Potato fields thriving under regenerative farming.

2 - The spuds get sorted

The best become food. The rest? Too wonky, too many, or simply surplus — saved from going to waste.

FAQ

Are they actually strong enough?

Absolutely. Our brilliant scientists have designed our bags to handle real-life situations and real-life waste. They don’t just look great on this website, they do exactly what you need at home.

Are they actually compostable, or is this eco waffle?

Yes. Kompost bags are independently certified compostable by TÜV Austria, one of the world’s most respected certification bodies for compostable materials. This certification verifies that the bags will break down into natural elements under composting conditions without leaving harmful residues.

Our bags have also passed the AS 5810 Home Composting Standard, which is widely recognised as one of the most rigorous tests for home compostability. This means the material is designed to break down in a typical home compost environment.

What are they made from?

Our unique blend of native starch from waste potatoes (native = no chemicals added) and other compostable polymers to make our bags strong enough for the job.

Where can I dispose of them?

Anywhere, but never litter. Home composting is ideal, but the bin is also fine, UK councils accept and may recommend compostable liners for food waste collection schemes.

Do they smell?

No, that's the beauty of our unique potato starch processing; unlike other cheaper starches, potato starch is odour-free.

Why waste potatoes?

A waste potato is simply a potato that cannot be sold. This might be because it is too small, damaged during harvest, misshapen, or fails the cosmetic standards required by supermarkets.

Across the food system, a significant proportion of potatoes never reach consumers. Studies estimate that around 8-10% of potatoes are wasted in Europe.

In Europe alone, farmers harvest over 48 million tonnes of potatoes each year, meaning millions of tonnes are rejected before they ever reach markets.

At Kompost, we believe this valuable resource should not go to food waste creating harmful greenhouse gases like methane.

Through Komposts own farming operations, we grow around 100 million potato plants each year, and typically over 6,000 tonnes of potatoes are not suitable for the market. Instead of discarding them, we transform this material into thermoplastic starch, which is then used to make our compostable bags.

By doing this, we turn agricultural waste into a useful product, helping create a circular system where waste from farming becomes part of the solution to waste management. Now that's a cool idea!
